Okay… I Thought It, But Did I Say It?

Things School Counselors Say vs. What We’re Actually Thinking
Have you ever said one thing as a school counselor while your inside voice had a completely different version ready to go?
Well… you’re not alone.
Our training teaches us how to respond with intention, empathy, and professionalism. We learn the right questions to ask, the right tone to use, and the right way to guide students (and adults) toward solutions. But let’s be real for a second—our thoughts are still our thoughts, y’all.
And having those thoughts? It doesn’t make us bad counselors. It makes us human.
There are days when I know I should say,
“What do you hope to accomplish from this meeting?”
…but what I want to say is,
“Here is exactly what needs to be fixed.”
The balance between what we say and what we think is basically a daily workout in self-control, professionalism, and deep breathing. So in the spirit of keeping it real…

😂 Things School Counselors Say vs. What We’re Actually Thinking
🗣️ What I Say: “I’d be happy to meet with that student!”
💭 What I’m Thinking: “I already have 12 students, 3 crises, a lunch duty, and a meeting… but sure, let’s do this.”
🗣️ What I Say: “Let’s take some deep breaths together.”
💭 What I’m Thinking: “I’m also trying not to lose it right now, so we’re in this together.”
🗣️ What I Say: “Tell me what’s going on.”
💭 What I’m Thinking: “Please don’t say ‘nothing’… please don’t say ‘nothing’…”
🗣️ What I Say: “That sounds really frustrating.”
💭 What I’m Thinking: “I completely understand why you flipped that desk… but we still can’t do that.”
🗣️ What I Say: “Have you tried using your coping strategies?”
💭 What I’m Thinking: “Remember the 17 times we practiced this?? Now is your moment!”
🗣️ What I Say: “I’ll follow up with you soon.”
💭 What I’m Thinking: “I will absolutely forget unless I write this down in the next 7 seconds.”
🗣️ What I Say: “Let’s make a plan together.”
💭 What I’m Thinking: “I have a plan… I just need you to agree to it.”
🗣️ What I Say: “I hear you.”
💭 What I’m Thinking: “I hear you, but I also heard a completely different version from three other people…”
🗣️ What I Say: “It’s okay to feel upset.”
💭 What I’m Thinking: “It’s not okay to scream, throw things, and run out of the building… but we’ll get there.”
🗣️ What I Say: “Let’s walk back to class together.”
💭 What I’m Thinking: “Please don’t bolt. Please don’t bolt. Please don’t bolt.”
🗣️ What I Say (to teachers): “I can check in with them.”
💭 What I’m Thinking: “I will now adopt this child emotionally for the next 6–8 weeks.”
🗣️ What I Say (in meetings): “We want to support the whole child.”
💭 What I’m Thinking: “And also maybe give them a snack, a nap, and a hug.”
🗣️ What I Say: “Thank you for sharing that with me.”
💭 What I’m Thinking: “That took courage… and now I need 5 minutes to process it too.”
💛 The Truth Behind It All
Here’s the thing: the gap between what we say and what we think isn’t fake; it’s intentional.
It’s the space where our training, our professionalism, and our heart step in to guide the moment in a way that actually helps students grow.
Because while our thoughts might be reactive, our words are purposeful.
And that’s the work.
That’s the balance.
That’s school counseling.
So if you’ve ever walked out of a meeting thinking, “Whew… that is not what I was thinking in my head,”
Just know, you’re doing exactly what you’re trained to do.
And you’re definitely not the only one.
