☕ Monday Motivation
Every Student Gets a Fresh Start on Monday
How many times have we heard the phrase, "Every day is a fresh start?"
It's something we tell our students.
It's something we remind teachers.
It's something we believe.
But if we're honest...do we always practice it ourselves?
We're human.
Sometimes, before the first bell even rings, we've already written today's story based on yesterday's chapter.
Maybe it's the teacher whose name pops up on your phone, and you instinctively think, "I wonder what's happened now."
Maybe it's the parent whose calls always seem to come at the busiest moment of your day.
Maybe it's the student you know will probably end up in your office again before lunch.
Without realizing it, yesterday's experiences begin shaping today's expectations.
And expectations have a funny way of influencing the conversations we have, the patience we offer, and the opportunities we give.
The truth is, students deserve the chance to write a new story every week.
Maybe every day.
As school counselors, we spend a great deal of time helping students challenge unhelpful thoughts and recognize the stories they tell themselves. But part of our own professional growth is being willing to examine the stories we tell ourselves, too.
Have I already decided how this conversation will go?
Am I seeing this student through the lens of their latest discipline referral instead of their potential?
Am I expecting progress, or am I expecting more of the same?
These aren't easy questions to ask ourselves, but they're important ones.
Because every one of us carries unconscious biases shaped by our experiences. The goal isn't to pretend they don't exist. The goal is to notice them before they begin influencing how we show up for our students.
Leadership and advocacy don't always happen in the big moments.
More often, they happen quietly.
They happen when we choose to greet a student with a genuine smile after a difficult Friday.
They happen when we offer another chance instead of another label.
They happen when we decide that yesterday's behavior doesn't have to determine today's relationship.
You never know what happened between Friday afternoon and Monday morning.
A student may have had the best weekend they've had in months.
They may have decided they want to try again.
They may have simply needed one adult to believe that they could.
What if that adult was you?
🌱 This Week's Challenge
As students walk through your door this week, pause for just a moment before your first interaction.
Ask yourself:
"What would change if I greeted this student like today was a brand-new beginning?"
Then greet them as if the answer matters.
Because it does.
Have a wonderful week, and remember...
Every student deserves the opportunity to write a new story.
Until next time...
Keep asking better questions.
Keep looking for strengths.
Keep building hope.
And remember… every conversation creates possibility.
