☕ Monday Motivation: Look for One Win Before the School Year Begins
If you're anything like me, the last couple of weeks of summer don't always feel like summer anymore.
Your mind has already started making lists.
Master schedule.
Classroom lessons.
Teacher and staff trainings.
Program goals.
Data review.
Program assessments.
Calendars.
Meet-the-Counselor activities.
Small groups.
Parent communication.
Office organization.
And somewhere in the middle of all of that, you're wondering how you're going to fit it all together before students walk through the doors.
The beginning of a school year is exciting, but let's be honest, it can also feel overwhelming.
As school counselors, we naturally see everything that needs to be done. We want every lesson to be engaging, every program to be meaningful, every training to be helpful, and every student to feel seen from day one.
Those are wonderful goals.
But trying to accomplish all of them at once can leave us feeling like we're already behind before the year has even begun.
So this week, I want to offer a different perspective.
Instead of trying to accomplish ten things...
Look for one win.
Ask yourself:
What needs my attention first?
What will make the biggest impact for students?
What went well last year that I can build on instead of reinventing?
What's one task I can complete today that will make tomorrow easier?
One of the greatest lessons I've learned as both a counselor and a doctoral student is that progress doesn't usually come from doing everything.
It comes from knowing what matters most right now.
Maybe your first win is finalizing your classroom lesson calendar.
Maybe it's reaching out to a new teacher before the school year begins.
Maybe it's reviewing last year's data to identify where your program made the greatest impact.
Maybe it's simply blocking time on your calendar to protect your own well-being once the school year starts.
None of those tasks seem extraordinary on their own.
But each one creates momentum.
And momentum has a way of turning small wins into meaningful progress.
As counselors, we often encourage students to celebrate small successes because we know confidence grows through progress.
The same is true for us.
We don't need to have every bulletin board finished or every lesson perfectly designed before we can feel successful.
We simply need to keep moving forward with purpose.
As you prepare for another school year, remember that your goal isn't to create a
perfect counseling program overnight.
Your goal is to create a program that helps students feel supported, connected, and hopeful.
That happens one relationship...
One lesson...
One conversation...
And yes, one win at a time.

🏆 This Week's One Win
Before you begin another planning session, choose one priority that will have the greatest impact on your students this year.
Complete that first.
Then celebrate it.
Progress deserves to be acknowledged.
🌱 This Week's Reflection
Ask yourself:
What is one success from last school year that I can build on instead of starting over?
Sometimes the best way to move forward isn't by creating something completely new.
Sometimes it's recognizing what's already working and giving yourself permission to build from there.
Have a wonderful week as you prepare for a new school year.
Your students don't need a perfect counselor.
They need a prepared, present, and hopeful one.
And remember...
Every conversation creates possibility.
